We betrayed Shaykh Abu Hamza & the Brothers

Bismillah

Rasullah (peace be upon him) said,

“Secure the release of the captive/prisoner!” [Al-Bukhari]

Imam Malik (RH) said,

“It is obligatory upon the people to ransom the prisoners with all what they possess, and there is no difference in this (amongst the jurists), because the Prophet (SAWS) said ‘Secure the release of the captive!’” [Al-Bukhari]

I write this first and foremost to account myself and then my brothers and sisters in the UK for what I see as our betrayal of Sheikh Abu Hamza, Khaled al-Fawwaz, Adel Abdul Bary and Talha Ashan.

Some of our brothers have been facing imprisonment and its various difficulties for nearly a decade, some more and some less. The support from the Ummah of two million in the UK for these brothers has been minimal to say the least.

If every Muslim had donated £100 a year for the last 10 years, we could have raised £2 billion towards their legal costs, campaigns, etc. so what if we had donated £500 a year? I mention money because it is one of the biggest weapons we have for our oppressed Ummah in the West.

Over the 10 years some of these brothers’ families have struggled with no support, whether emotional or financial, yet the outstretched hands of help were few. In fact, some non-Muslims helped so much for the brothers’ cases, yet we have millionaires with the title “Muslim” among us – we really have some accounting to do before we meet Allah (SWT).

In the last few days many organizations arranged events and campaigns for some of the brothers, but in truth it was too little, too late, as the brothers needed us ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two years ago. Our egos may have been satisfied by our actions, but in reality even if 2 million Muslims in Britain turned up at the campaigns, it was too little too late for them to have influence on the decisions being made.

The failure to campaign for these brothers over the last decade has been largely due to nationalism (he is Egyptian, so it’s not my problem), “groupism” (he is not from my jamaa’ah or doesn’t fit our agenda), “sheikhism” (my sheikh doesn’t like him or thinks he is an extremists so I can’t help him), and so forth. Everybody wanted their interests to be fulfilled, instead of caring about what really mattered – the brothers and what they needed from us as an Ummah. This needs to change fast.

It was also very hypocritical to see some organizations (without to mention any names) showing concern for some of the brothers, yet these same organizations came out publicly in the media calling for the arrest of Sheikh Abu Hamza (as well as other Muslims), and actually stating they were pleased when he was arrested. In the end, their leader received a knighthood from the Queen! And this is what I mean by self-interests.

Maybe as individuals or groups we have had successes here and there, but as an Ummah in the UK we are falling, because we are not united – the extradition of our brothers really highlights this fact.

“And those who disbelieve are allies to one another, (and) if you (Muslims of the whole world collectively) do not do so (i.e. become allies, as one united block with one Khaleefah – chief Muslim ruler for the whole Muslim world to make victorious Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism), there will be Fitnah (wars, battles, polytheism, etc.) and oppression on earth, and a great mischief and corruption (appearance of polytheism).” (TMQ 8:73)

It is about time to really do some soul searching and ask ourselves how sincere we are in supporting the Deen and the believers; how much are we pleased to do activities to please our egos? It’s time for the Mashaykh, Da’ees and Jamaa’ahs to really sit down and discuss our differences with daleel and sincerity, whilst accepting the truth when it is given. It is about time we become united as an Ummah for short term objectives ( i.e. Muslims causes, building the Ummah, liberating Muslim lands, freeing prisoners, helping the oppressed, etc.) and the long term ones (establishing the Khilafah, spreading Islam throughout the Earth), instead of,

“But they (men) have broken their Deen among themselves into sects, each group rejoicing in its belief.” (TMQ 23:53)

By Allah my dear brothers and sisters, I am fearful that the days ahead will be hard for us; I am fearful that the punishment of Allah will descend upon all the Muslims in the UK, and we might face what our brothers faced in Bosnia for the way we dealt with our brothers.

May Allah wake up the Muslims in the UK and the whole Ummah, unite their Shuyookh, Da’ees, and Jamaa’at upon the Haqq and free them from partisanship and pathetic quarrels that have no significance in helping the Deen and Ummah.

Ameen
