Assisted by 120 volunteers, 200 firefighters were struggling in this mountainous region of Mount Athos (north-eastern part of Greece), backed by 14 air tankers and seven helicopters, said the press office concerning the fire.

The army has in turn announced Saturday it had deployed to the scene some 314 of its members and about fifty of support vehicles.
The fire had broken out Wednesday near the Serbian Shierk Akbar monastery of Hilandariou, one of the major shierk institutions of Mount Athos, 49 Serbian firefighters reinforced their Greek allies and were already sent Friday by Belgrade.
