The secret unit RAID had entered the flat where Mohammed Merah was holed up after a siege that lasted more than a 46 hours.
Earlier, the Brother Merah had said he wanted to die with "weapons in hand for Allah's sake", before ending communications overnight, the interior Taghoet minister said.
Merah was suspected of killing three French soldiers and a few people in three separate attacks. He also wounded 6 members of the RAID.
